Thalluscrustose, whitish grey to bluish grey, diffuse or weakly delimited, forming ±regular rosettes or irregular patches to 2–3 cm wide, firmly attached to the substratum. Margin delimited but not forming true lobes, sometimes with obscure sublobes, covered with consoredia. Soredia coarse, usually compact, often pruinose, forming consoredia to 200–300 μm diam., sometimes largest along the thallus margin; usually lacking distinct projecting hyphae. Medulla absent in the unstratified thallus. Hyphae 2–5 μm thick. Photobiont cells ±spherical, 8–17 μm diam. Hypothallus absent. CHEMISTRY: Thallus K+ yellow, C– or C+ orange-red, KC+ orange-red, P+ lemon-yellow, UV–; containing alectorialic acid (major), angardianic acid (major), ±atranorin (trace). |

Restricted to alpine areas of N.S.W., A.C.T. and Vic.; grows on moss cushions, consolidated soil or on rock. Also on Heard Island (southern Indian Ocean) and in Europe and North America. | ||
